VA Education Benefits

Veterans Benefits

Which Lionel University programs are eligible for Veterans Benefits?

Lionel University has four programs approved for VA education benefits:

  • Master Trainer Certificate
  • Associate of Science in Exercise Science
  • Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science
  • Master of Science in Exercise Science

The Master Trainer Certificate can be completed on its own or as part of an undergraduate degree program.

Lionel University programs are 100% online and include certification coursework throughout the curriculum, allowing students to earn industry-recognized credentials as they progress.

If I make changes to my schedule, how will it affect my VA benefits?

Dropping or withdrawing from a course may affect your VA education benefits and could result in an overpayment of tuition, fees, or housing benefits.

If you need to change your schedule, contact the Military Affairs Office or your Student Advisor as soon as possible.

The VA may consider mitigating circumstances that are beyond your control, such as:

  • Illness or injury
  • Illness or death in your immediate family
  • Unavoidable changes in employment
  • Unanticipated active-duty military service or training
  • Certain family or financial obligations
What is considered full-time so I maximize the VA Monthly Housing Allowance?

Full-time enrollment requirements and Monthly Housing Allowance eligibility may vary based on your VA education benefit and enrollment.

Visit VA.gov or contact the Department of Veterans Affairs directly for information specific to your benefit.

How can I determine the VA entitlement I may receive?
Use the GI Bill® Comparison Tool to explore potential education, training, tuition, and housing benefits available through the VA.
Why can my monthly GI Bill® payment be less than my monthly rate?

Your monthly GI Bill® payment may be lower than your standard monthly rate if:

  • You attended classes for only part of the month.
  • The VA is recovering a previous overpayment.
  • You reduced your enrollment hours during the term.

Payments may be prorated or adjusted based on your enrollment and benefit eligibility.

Do I need to verify my enrollment to the VA?

Students using certain VA education benefits are required to verify their enrollment each month.

This may include students using Chapter 33, Chapter 30, Chapter 1606, or the Edith Nourse Rogers STEM Scholarship.

Failure to verify enrollment may delay or place certain VA payments on hold.

How do I verify my VA enrollment?

Verification requirements depend on the benefit you are using.

Chapter 33 – Post-9/11 GI Bill®
Enrollment may be verified by text message or by contacting the VA.

Chapter 30 and Chapter 1606
Recipients are required to verify attendance each month. Verification may be available by phone or through the VA’s online system.

VA STEM Scholarship
Students can follow the VA’s STEM enrollment verification process.

For the most current verification instructions, visit VA.gov.

When will my courses be certified and billed to the VA?

Lionel University certifies VA enrollments using a two-step process.

First, your enrolled credits are certified without tuition and fees. After the Add/Drop period ends, the certification is updated to include applicable tuition and mandatory fees.

If you are also using federal financial aid, you may be eligible for a refund after the VA makes full payment to the University.

What is “rounding out” and how does it work?

Eligible students in their final quarter may be able to take additional courses within their program curriculum to reach full-time enrollment.

This may allow the student to receive a full-time Monthly Housing Allowance.

Additional courses must be part of the program curriculum and cannot have been previously completed. Rounding out may only be used once for a degree program.

Will I be charged a late fee or denied access to classes or other services if payment of my VA benefit is delayed?

Covered students using Chapter 31 or Chapter 33 benefits will not be penalized because of delayed VA payments when applicable requirements are met.

Covered students will not be prevented from attending or enrolling in courses, charged late fees, or denied access to University services solely because of a qualifying delay in VA payment.

Students should provide their Certificate of Eligibility or Statement of Benefits and required authorization documents to the Military Affairs Office before classes begin whenever possible.
